Abstract
In the second half of 2019, the Qingdao West Coast New Area planning authorities have invited ISOCARP Institute to provide it with a contemporary, international urban planning and design knowledge perspective on the next stage development and implementation of the (governmental) policies for the new era in development of the maritime cities. This knowledge perspective was presented in the format of an UPAT Design Week – a 5-day intensive collaborative creative process between Chinese and international planning experts and designers, which embodied field visits, presentations, dialogues and a design charrette. The “Smart Future of Qingdao’s Port Area” Session will feature the results of the UPAT Design Week, which defined Qingdao’s West Coast Area as a model for the knowledge/production/trade-oriented city of the future. The main idea behind the model is to form a circular metabolic system, based on the sustainable use of resources, coastal landscape protection and management, application of the state-of-the art urban digitalization solutions, efficient infrastructural / mobility solutions and creating a diversity of mixed, safe and quality urban environments for its citizens. The session will also showcase the spatial, landscape and policy recommendation and the strategic urban design insights for a smaller section of the West Coast Area called the QiaoTouPu Area. This area serves as a practical example of how to realize the Smart Maritime City based on the principles of urban metabolism. In the first part of this 60’ Session, the Session curators will present rich visual (video and keynote) documentary material featuring the creative process of the Design Week, showcasing multiple-level, design solutions for integrated urban living in the production and service area of the QiaoTouPu Area. In the second part of the session the panel of international urban planning and design experts and experts from China and QiaoTouPu District Headquarters will discuss the “next steps” for Qingdao West Coast area and maritime cities of the future, followed by Q&A session from the audience. Session curators: Ir MSc Milena Ivkovic, Director UPAT ISOCARP Institute and Dr Sebastien Goethals, Director Technical Assistance ISOCARP Institute. Session Panelists: experts in the fields of maritime planning, integrated urban planning, urban mobility, data-driven urbanism, urban design, architecture and landscape architecture from Europe, Asia, and the Middle-East. Session panelists list is subject to change.
