Physical activities and physical distancing - being active during pandemics

Abstract
This case study investigates how the built environment can respond to challenges such as keeping the citizens physically active during crisis of Covid-19 pandemics. Many of the countries have imposed lockdowns - more and less strict - or stay at home orders. Many citizens would avoid physical contact or nearness with other people anyway. But on the other hand the need to exercise would still be there, and at some point even stronger than before. In some cases even a small expedition outside to walk the dog, jog or simply ride the bike, would be of big benefit that would keep them both physically and mentally in balance. But how well are our cities organised to cope with this demand and what can the citizens do in order to exercise? What can be done at home? What can happen virtually and how well these artificial words and settings can provide for them? Can we redesign the public space to allow for the necessary distancing and safety of such activities? This presentation will critically discuss the above based on the examples of different places and lead into a discussion on the principles, guidelines and solutions to be provided in these difficult times.
