Prospective analysis and re-design of pedestrian friendly cbd area: a case study of rajshahi city center

Abstract
In the era of rapid urbanism, growing transportation demand and supply is increasing burden in urban areas, while central business district areas are major vulnerable zone of this burden. High amount of traffic with lower maintenances provision in CBD areas not only increase the accident rate, but also decrease pedestrian facilities. So, improving the traffic maintenance provision and increasing pedestrian facilities is a demand of time. In this sense, present transportation and pedestrian scenario of Rajshahi CBD area has been analyzed. Several transportation and pedestrian survey have been conducted through using both primary and secondary datasets to state the current transportation scenario. Surprisingly high amount of traffic with lower pedestrian facilities causes greatest amount of pedestrian vehicle conflict at the CBD area and in this respect existing scope of pedestrian precinct CBD development intend the researchers to redesign the area as a pedestrian precinct zone. Proposed design includes all types of basic pedestrian facilities along with emergency services and other management issues. As this study not only cure the problem of CBD area, but also but also enhance the quality of CBD are, the study has a higher potentiality regarding the city development process through increased quality of urban and human life.
