Abstract
Urban inclusion is the key aspect of sustainable development. An inclusive city promotes growth with equity; where everyone, regardless of their economic means, gender, race, ethnicity, or religion, is enabled and empowered to fully participate in the social, economic, and political opportunities. The smart city with the help of technology can create immense possibilities towards achievement of physical, economic and social inclusion. It can open new opportunities for citizens and give everyone a chance to participate and drive the future of their cities by sparking new forms of civic engagement, increasing social inclusion and accessibility for vulnerable and most disadvantaged including persons with disabilities, reducing infrastructural barriers, sharing resources, accessing relevant information and enabling a real-time dialogue in which city administrators and citizens can learn from one another and co-create workable solutions. This paper identifies the lead smart cities working towards urban sustainability with major focus on inclusion of vulnerable and marginalised communities and presents the successful projects, programs and policies as global best practices, which can be replicated and implemented in other cities in order to tackle the challenge of urban inclusion and building more inclusive and sustainable communities.
