Abstract
Urban Evolutionary theories advocate that there are correlations among the elements of urban structure. That is Density, Diversity of an urban area are positively correlated with Street network Patterns. In that Built Environment density sustenance the diversity in functional typologies. Accessibility is reflected as the output of all the above-mentioned dimensions. Enhancing Accessibility is being considered as one of an urban regeneration strategy in evolving smart city concepts. However, in the cities whose morphology evolved organically, it seems multiple diverse factors start to influence those elements. Chennai one such organically evolved city in the southern part of India, where it seems that the urban elements in certain areas are not correlated to each other. The city development pattern contradicts the theory of Natural processes of urban Transformation. The proposed study aims to explore this unique reason behind these prevailing conditions based on Density, Diversity, and Street network Efficiency using Space matrix, MXI value, and space syntax respectively. Space matrix, a quantitative measure of density by computing Floor space index (FSI) and Ground space index (GSI). Quantification of land use by mixed-use index (MXI) expresses the degree of a functional mix of the typology of buildings. Space syntax a phenomenon for understanding the efficiency of street networks by the factor of integration values, where integration value is directly related to accessibility. The higher integration value of the street network considered to be the most vibrant functional area. The outcome of the study will help us in understanding the unique issues of the organically evolved urban morphology to enhance its Accessibility. A city shall not immediately enhance accessibility probably the innovations of technology involved in delivering services to home, bringing work from home opportunities, sharing rides, connecting people and information sharing through the smart technologies may be the solution for the accessibility issues for a haphazard urban development by reducing the frequent trips.
