Abstract With the expansion of highly development cities, a new type of city, called megacity, has naturally formed worldwide. Compared with ordinary cities, the population size and land size of megacity are much greater, leading to the evolution of urban structures and further influencing people’s travel pattern. Understanding the insights of megacity’s travel pattern is important for urban transportation system design and management, but this issue was seldom studied. To fill in the gap, this paper analyzed the travel pattern of megacity via Shanghai taxi trajectory data. Some key factors including travel distance distribution, spatial-temporal-varied travel pattern, the relationship of travel demand and point of interests, are conducted according to the OD data generated from taxi trajectory data. Based on such measurements, the travel pattern of the central city area and suburb area at Shanghai are further discussed. These analyzed results would provide substantial support for transportation system design and management for Shanghai, China.
