Abstract
Qatar is making a remarkable progress when it comes to building sustainable architectural communities and improving the transport services. It is vital to ensure that Qatar is empowered with the skills to integrate cutting edge technologies within its urban spaces. In Qatar, the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology is concentrating on initiatives that support the activities of all sectors and help sponsors adopt smart technologies. The technologies that seem impracticable are now shaping the smart cities and solving the everyday problems through innovative approaches. Qatar, in its quest for innovation and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens has already made the move of making a landmark in this race of smart growth. It has started to orient the lives of its citizens towards smart living in line with its National Vision 2030. For example, Lusail City deploys smart applications in infrastructure, buildings, energy, mobility, and utilities (“Smart District”). This study focuses on the mobility feature of what creates a smart city – specifically with respect to transportation. Smart technologies propose a far-fetched prospective for sustainable mobility. In this study, a systematic literature review is made to comprehend how the term smart city is used and the trending transportation technologies. Qatar is taking numerous initiatives to bring in smart technologies to its soil. There are certainly several transportation technologies available today that can underpin transportation in Qatar in a smarter way. Although the present progress in Qatar has been impressive, there has been rather little reflection as to what urban planning changes are required to adopt these technologies. Therefore, there is a need for a detailed study of the smart transportation systems used in different parts of the world and then provide recommendations for implementing these in the case of Qatar. To sum, the research aims to explore the trending smart mobility technologies and to identify the extent to which these can be integrated in the existing urban fabric of Qatar. It investigates the trending smart road technologies that can be or are being integrated in Qatar and how can these be integrated in the existing urban fabric of Qatar. The strategy used for data collection is exploratory. Different areas in Qatar are selected for adopting these technologies depending on the technology that best suits a region. The data collection and analysis are grounded on the descriptive data about the new technologies as perceptible aspects. Technologies that are studied and are proposed for implementation in Qatar within the scope of this paper are autonomous vehicles, interactive light and electric priority lane. Qualitative method will be adopted for data collection and analysis. This research is focused on the usage of words to explain in detail information and data collected from research. Towards the end of this research, data about the latest technologies that are being implemented across the globe will be collected. The data collected will then be utilized to establish a guide to integrate these technologies in the existing urban fabric of Qatar. Data about technologies like interactive lighting, self-driving cars, electric priority lane will be collected. This study can be applied to cities that are equipped with smart technologies to further enhance their vision of being smart. It is not completely applicable in sectors which are rural or designed for industrial use.
