Development at Howrah Station Zone, Case of the 100 year old Fish Market Area

Abstract
The thesis work investigates the causes for the slow down of the process of urbanization in Howrah City; With the idea of identifying the potential areas which can be treated accordingly in order to widen the avenues for any future development in and around the Howrah Station Zone. Treating the land-use of the identified Urban Decay area followed by the rejuvenation of the subject area through the proposition of justified Land-use in order to tap the true potential of the land and at the same time ensuring a sustainable future for the city. Through urban analysis of identified areas which have been facing misuse and underutilization thus causing the ultimate decay of the overall context directly or indirectly. A part of Howrah Station Zone was selected, belonging to Ward no. 14 of the Howrah District; With Howrah Station as the centre for the 1km radius of the study area. A brief study of the existing scenario was conducted, followed by the identification of the potential areas were the organized activity would be injected. Subsequent to the study and analysis of the study area, the present blight areas of the fish market and the perishable vegetable market was affirmed for the proposal of the mixed-use development to the capitalize the true potential of the land. The report reflects a brief history of Howrah, its theoretical framework, methodological analysis of the subject area, followed by the selection of the site with parallel analysis and proposition of a landmark project dealing with immediate demand derived from the site; Creation of a catchment zone for Commercial and Business ventures. By reckoning the original research of other researcher/ proposals by the Government agencies, the following project can form an important part of the research-based solution to widen the avenues for the future development of Howrah Station Zone.
