Abstract
As recently, the emphasis on sustainable contemporary cities has been increased, as well as the concern in sustainable urban planning especially its remarkable role in environmental, social, and economic aspects. Also because of the outstanding connection between public values and sustainability, research on sustainable temporary uses is one of the significant ways to ensure sustainability in urban planning development, especially when people use public spaces in different ways from what it is originally designed for, to meet there needs. Based on this, this research analyzed the sustainability of temporary uses by analyzing the environmental, economic, social, and legal aspects of temporary uses in public spaces. This study aims to understand how to construct sustainable temporary use and to find issues that have to be considered when establishing temporary uses to promote sustainability in urban planning based on this. Firstly, in terms of the environmental aspect, temporary uses' designs, construction technologies, materials, and participants have to respect and protect the surrounding environment. Secondly, regarding the economic aspect, temporary uses are considered one of the most important industries in cities, however, temporary uses have specific launch they are still linked to the economic situation in cities. Thirdly, according to the social aspect, it is important to take into consideration the effect of the temporary uses on society, the success of temporary uses for the community could be measured by achieving the social needs of the inhabitants. Fourthly, for the Legal aspect public authorities’ and Local authority’ cooperation in addition planning and construction regulations are important instruments having a great role which helps temporary uses to be successful. Oman works on presenting its diversity of environmental and cultural heritage, and activating commercial and economic mobility, as well, examining its urban potential and future urban planning development through temporary uses in public spaces during numerous festivals. This research analyzed two remarkable festivals, which achieved their goals through a variety of activities included in temporary uses of public spaces. Finally, the sustainability of temporary uses is achieved by the inflow of the activities that meet environmental characteristics and local needs by appropriate investments under the adequate legal framework, which will be carried out by the existing generation with saving the right of the next generation. The research explores how the different aspects of temporary use could lead to the success of this type of use. Temporary uses have a great role in the urban planning development of cities as it works like living labs for experimenting before long investments to achieve social needs with saving the environment.
